Kimball, Minnesota Wedding
Photographing this beautiful wedding at Powder Ridge Ski Area up in Kimball, MN was certainly a day filled with many obstacles met with joy-filled hearts. In short, no amount of wedding preparation could have prepared anyone for the craziness that unfolded as the day progressed, but these two were loving every minute of it!
From the time I arrived up to the first photo of the two together, everything fell into place as it should. The dress went on perfectly, the decorations had been laid out perfectly, and their first look calmed the pre-ceremony nerves that culminated all morning. During the day, the only absolute request that Bonnie and Kyle had was to get a photograph of the two of them on a ski lift. Their mutual love for skiing and snowboarding made Powder Ridge, and their ski lifts, the perfect setting for them. We moved from their first look straight into their portraits, and the first was the ski lift. Conveniently, Bonnie’s brothers showed up just in time to lift her into the seat of the ski lift, and Kyle scooted is way up next to her!
Here’s where it gets CRAZY – We took a few photos and I decided to have them switch places. Kyle jumped down, Bonnie scooted across the seat to the other side, and Kyle jumped back up. We continued carrying on and laughing at the whole process, and I noticed a big black smudge across Bonnie’s face – further inspection confirmed my panic. We quickly realized it was mechanical grease that dripped from the gears of the ski lift, and not only did it get on her face but also on Kyle’s pants AND Bonnie’s dress! We spent the next hour vigorously cleaning their clothes before the ceremony, and managed to have it go unnoticed. How they managed to clear it up so well, I’m still unsure, but it was a miracle for sure.
Carrying on, we finished up family and wedding party, moved our way inside for a little break before the ceremony, and almost instantly everything went dark. From the photos, you can see that there was not a cloud in the sky – full sun nearly all day. However, for the duration of their 20-minute ceremony, the craziest rain storm made an appearance that sent everyone inside for the ceremony. It was obviously not their plan A, but we made the most of it!
The ceremony finishes and we take a bit of time downstairs to have a quick toast with the bridal party. There was a moment where Kyle was joking around about shooting the champagne cork at someone – but, you guessed it, the joke wasn’t a joke for long. The cork went off and hit Kyle’s best man square in the nose. Thankfully no noses were broken, and this was the last of the un-planned craziness that went on during their day. But, I can’t praise Kyle and Bonnie enough for how chill they stayed throughout all the chaos. It’s now a serious story for them to tell for a lifetime!
